What's a virtual opportunity?
To search for a volunteer opportunity on our website you need to sign in to your account and then go to the "Search for opportunities" page. If you haven't got an account with us you'll need to register first.
We often have more than 400 volunteer opportunities available throughout the UK. You don't want to see all of those at once so the search form allows you to narrow your search based on some features of the opportunity.
Search fields
The search form allows you to specify one or more of the following to limit the results of the search:
- Regions - this is the region of the UK that the charity is based in. You may wish to choose the region that you live or work in so that you don't have to travel far. But also below for the "virtual" option.
- Skill types - when the project definer creates the volunteer opportunity on our system he or she chooses a skill type which closely matches what is required by the organisation. This means that you can look for opportunities which best match your skills. But remember that there is a lot of overlap between skill types. For example, when does "advice" become "consultancy" and is one-to-one "training" just another name for "mentoring"?
- Charity types - if you wish to work with organisations with specific aims you should use this option. When a charity registers with us they have a option to specify one or more areas in which they work. This is shown as "charity type".
- "Short task" opportunities - these are opportunities which we think will take no more than a couple of days for a professional volunteer to complete. We know that the charity are well-prepared and ready to start.
- Virtual - virtual opportunities are ones where you don't meet the people you're working with. They might be at the opposite end of the country - or even, the world. This option lets you choose whether to include these opportunities in the results ('yes' or 'no') or if you don't mind ('no preference').
