Case studies

In each edition of the newsletter we like to feature one or more examples of IT volunteer projects. We hope that reading about these projects will inspire you to think of better ways for your organisation to use IT and perhaps ask for a volunteer to help you.

If you have completed an IT project with volunteer assistance we'd love to hear about it and to feature it on our website and in a future newsletter. Although all of our current case studies feature success stories we would also like to hear when things don't go so well. If you've had problems with a project perhaps others can learn from your experiences.

To tell us about your project please e-mail info@it4communities.org.uk and request a case study form.

In this issue we'd like to showcase a couple of website projects:

The Friends of the Flitch Way had no website when they contacted iT4Communities. They were keen to have an attractive site to help them advertise their conservation work and to publicise their events. They have a lot of photos so wanted to feature those on the site. Initially they wanted only a few pages but needed a solution which could be extended in the future. Read the case study describing how they worked with volunteer Paul Campbell to develop a site which they can update themselves.

The Consortium for Street Children were looking for help with their existing website. Although they were happy with the design of the site it involved using a bespoke CMS (content management system) to do updates. This meant that there were certain areas of the site which they couldn't easily update. They hoped to find a volunteer who could find a way around those restrictions. In the case study Christian Harris from the charity describes how the problem was solved by volunteer Lai Chu.

You can read more case studies on our website and we have also recently added a section showing some example opportunities. This page shows real opportunities from our site exactly as they would be presented to potential volunteers. We hope that these examples will give you an idea of the wide range of projects IT volunteers can help with.
